"I often baulk when I hear that I’m writing about lowlife people and bayou priests and fucking serial killers and all that sort of stuff. I know there’s an element of that, but for me I’m writing about myself. Even when I’m writing about my wife, I’m writing about myself, dressed up as my wife. It feels odd when people say I write about characters who exist outside myself- they’re aspects of my character, for better or worse. They may not be attractive, but they’re truthful and as authentic as I can make them."
