“The only time I’ve ever seen Marc Almond (in the flesh) was at a gig in Camden’s Electric Ballroom in 1984. It was a Sisters of Mercy gig. Marc was hanging out with Nick Cave and Blixa Bargeld and was stoned and zombie-like, dressed in black and red with layers of panstick and eyeliner. His hair was long, jet-black and crimped (a style I soon adopted). When he walked it was like he was falling forwards in slow motion. I will never forget seeing him - he radiated cool, people parted like the Red Sea to let him through whilst feigning complete disinterest in the tiny popstar…”

Blixa Bargeld & Marc Almond,
12 April 1984
Oh, this is much better with the picture; I have to reblog it!
Interesting tidbit: According to a Sisters of Mercy fansite’s list of shows, this quote refers to a show on May 24, which means that they continued to hang out for over a month after this picture was taken. (So what I’m really saying here is that Blixa must have liked it.)
Oh! I misread this and thought Marc was at the Bad Seeds gig at the Electric Ballroom on 12 April. So in light of your information the date of this pic remains uncertain. The Cavemen toured UK until 14 May, after which Blixa was recording Halber Mensch with Neubauten. The band then toured Europe as The Bad Seeds but minus Blixa. On 24 May they were in Hamburg (minus Blixa) and couldn’t have attended that particular SOM show - with or without Marc Almond. Hm… Thank you for the feedback. I always wondered about the when/where of this picture.
Hm, how odd. I didn’t know any of the specific dates for Nick or Blixa’s projects; that’s interesting. The man who wrote the original quote did so almost twenty years after he saw them at a show, so maybe he just mixed up the band they were seeing. I suppose the Sisters of Mercy fansite could be wrong about the date as well. Now I’m even more curious about it because of the mystery!

Oh, thanks, that’s really helpful! For Neubauten I was thinking maybe Haus der Lüge and then something from Halber Mensch, but Feurio! should work too. The song From Her to Eternity seems especially good for this. Maybe John Finn’s Wife too? Okay, I just really love that song.
Alright, I’m editing this because I’m new to Tumblr and can’t figure out how to reply to a reply. I’m glad you said that about Do You Love Me?, because I was just considering that one and wouldn’t have thought of it as being slow. At least it worked for you, though! Thanks again for the help. :-)
What are some good Nick Cave/Neubauten/Birthday Party songs to recommend to someone who’s mostly into metal? I’m not that familiar with metal, so I’m not sure if the songs I like best will be the ones that a metal lover would.
My dad’s company is going to start working on new and more comprehensive early learning language programs - in English and many other languages. I told him that when we make the German one we NEED to try to get Blixa to do voice work on it. I wonder if Blixa would consider that…
- named himself after a felt pen
- was described by Henry Rollins as “warm and cuddly”
- recorded industrial covers of showtunes
- wore leather bondage overalls and a dildo harness on a daily basis
- published a CD of erotic poetry readings
- used the inside of a bridge support pillar for band practice
- hung his semen-stained sheets up in a gay bar frequented by David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Michel Foucault
- can make inhuman, unearthly sounds and fit them perfectly to music
- casually references philosophers and artists while demonstrating a profound knowledge of their work
-is an incredibly gifted writer of both music and text
-likes to kiss boys
-has elf ears
When I put on Nick Cave while playing Tetris with my dad yesterday, my dad made several disparaging comments about Nick’s vocals, which is normal for him. However, upon hearing “he’s a fat little insect,” he agreed with the song and said that Nick is fat: “He’s not obese, but he is flabby. I’ve seen him in videos before; I can tell by looking at him.” I think he ridicules the music I like just to annoy me, but he was serious with this. I don’t even know how anyone could look at Nick Cave and think he’s fat, but even if he were, why should we care?
